Latest developments in the saga of the ‘Barnsley’ lavatera. In my post of July 2022 I was cautiously optimistic that there might once again be a lavatera true to the ‘Barnsley’ variety (or rather chimera) in the garden. As it happens, I have. Last April I planted the 2 specimens from carefully picked cuttings on stems bearing both varieties of flowers.

Once these cuttings had been planted in the ground, they grew generously and I now have both types of flowers, just as I’d hoped.

Yesterday the weather was quite unpredictable and a small hail shower had blanketed Papi Jo’s garden. This morning a mini tornado ravaged the garden. Fucking climate change…

Today a superb weather to end the month of March in beauty. At the end of the afternoon, the sky was all grey, then all blue, followed by a sudden and brief hail shower then the return of the all blue sky.

News of the “resident birds” in papi Jo’s garden… Pics of the day.

Hotel Restaurant ‘chez Papi Jo’. Unfortunately the home-made hotel especially made for blue tits remains empty year after year (except in 2020). The hanging peanuts garland is a cunning device to entice tits to book into the hotel this season. We’ll see.

Winter is fast approaching, and it’s time to think about protecting the most fragile plants in the garden. Last winter, we had two periods of frost that did not suit some of the ferns in the fern wall. All these ferns are hardy, but after talking to the nurserywoman at Ecoute-s’il-pleut, it seems that the location of these containers exposing them to the cold and also to the wind caused some losses.

So today I unhooked the 28 containers (!), put them on the ground in a corner of the pergola and covered them with a thick coat of … fern (collected in the nearby forest). Let’s hope they like it.
