Dialog Cards Papi Jo Version 1.16.22 February 2026<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n
Introduction<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Here you will find details of the various differences between the official H5P distribution of the Dialog Cards content type and the Dialog Cards ‘papi Jo’ version I have developed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Dialog cards editor<\/h5>\n\n\n\n
Added some functions to the text editor: Font size, font colour (s), bulleted and numbered lists, horizontal ruler.<\/h6>\n\n\n\n

  • Font colour feature<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Fixed <\/em>alignment error for left-centred<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • It is now possible to leave the text in the Response field<\/em> empty.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Optional image for the front of the card.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • This image will also be displayed on the back of the card if no rear image is provided.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
    Add an image to the back of the card.<\/h6>\n\n\n\n

    A card can have any of the following: no attached image at all; a front image only (which will be displayed on the front and on the back<\/em>); a front image and a back image; no front image and a back image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    No front but back image feature<\/h6>\n\n\n\n

    The combination of blank response text and no image for the front of the card but an image for the back is shown in the Flags – Match example on page 11 of the Interactive Book with Examples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Added web-link support to the Text and Answer Editors<\/h6>\n\n\n\n
    Added an audio file to the back of a card<\/h6>\n\n\n\n
    Added a filter cards by categories<\/em> option<\/h6>\n\n\n\n

    Just above the list of cards\/dialogs when the Enable Categories in Dialogs<\/em> option is selected, an extra Card Category\/ies<\/em> field is made available at the end of each card’s parameters. It says: Optional. Category item(s) that this card belongs to. Enter the item name(s) separated by a comma and no space.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Added a text only<\/em> option. Feature requested by Adrian Mielke (thanks for your Amzn gift, Adrian!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Added audio on both sides of cards.<\/h6>\n\n\n\n
    Enable Subtitles in Cards:<\/h6>\n\n\n\n

    Optional Subtitle for each card when the ‘Free browsing with cards side by side’ mode is enabled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2 – Parameters \/ Behavioural settings<\/h5>\n\n\n\n
    2.1.1 Categories filtering<\/h6>\n\n\n\n

    Create one or more filters to be used to filter the cards displayed to the end user. Use the Card Categories entered for the cards above.<\/em> Each filter<\/em> consists of 2 fields:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n
    • the list <\/em>of the category\/ies to be used in this filter<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • a Filter Boolean operator<\/em>
      Select the Boolean operator to process the list of filters defined above. The default value is AND. The AND <\/strong>operator will limit <\/strong>the choice to cards that belong to ALL the categories listed in this filter. The OR <\/strong>operator will expand <\/strong>the choice to all cards that belong to at least ONE category. The NOT <\/strong>operator will exclude all cards belonging to any category listed in the filter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
      2.1.2 Filter by Categories<\/h6>\n\n\n\n

      After you have created one or more filters in the : Categories filtering <\/strong>option, you can use the following drop-down selection list to enable the filtering mode, out of 3 options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \n
      • No filtering<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • First (or unique) filter defined above.<\/s> This option has been removed from version 1.16.18 onwards because it sometimes broke the display of cards.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Filter selected by user. If more than one filter has been defined<\/em>, this option will enable the user to select a filter at runtime.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        Important note.-<\/strong> This Filter by categories<\/em> option needs careful planning in order to give the desired results. Unfortunately, due to the limits of the H5P so-called “semantics” authoring mode, it is not possible to check that the activity author (you) will use consistent category names both in each card’s settings nor in the filter(s) created. You must be particularly careful with your spelling and only use the very same category names in the cards and in the filter(s). You must also make sure you understand the concepts of filtering by Boolean operators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        From a pedagogical point of view you must make sure that you are using a useful & meaningful set of filter categories in your activity. The “Proverbs – categories” and the “Flags – categories” examples in the Examples Interactive Book provide demonstrations of such features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        2.2 Select Mode  (display mode)<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

        Free browsing<\/strong> is the default mode. In Match<\/strong> mode the user will have to pair the front and the back sides of cards. In Self Correction<\/strong> mode, they will be able to guess the other side of the cards and confirm if they got it correct or not. Match with Repetition<\/strong> is a combination of the Match<\/strong> and Self Correction<\/strong> modes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        NEW FEATURE from version 1.16.20 of december 2025: Mode selected by user<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        This new option can considerably enhance the versatility of the Dialog Cards activities. If this option is enabled, the student can choose to learn and test themselves in all 5 play modes mentioned above. When this option is selected, a further option appears on the Edit screen: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

        In this example, the student will be offered a choice of the 4 selected Play Modes, but the un-selected Free browsing side by side<\/em> choice won’t be displayed. By default all 5 modes are selected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        With all 5 modes selected by teacher, the H5P activity will look like this when the student attempts it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Supposing the student selects the Match with repetition <\/em>mode, a notice with that Mode’s name will be displayed when he does the activity:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Once the current activity is finished (here on the final Summary screen), a click on the Retry button will take the student to the very first screen where they can select a new Play Mode…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

        WARNING<\/strong>.- Although I have tried and tested this new “User select mode” feature heavily, it is not 100% guaranteed to work at all times and on all platforms. If possible use it on a development site first, and report any problems to me with all the relevant details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        <\/p>\n\n\n\n

        When modes other than Free browsing<\/strong> are selected, further options become available:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        2.3 Penalty percentage<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

        Each extra round (in Self-correction mode) or each wrong match (in Match with Repetition mode) will cost the user this percentage of the maximum score. Enter 0 for NO penalty. Maximum penalty is 50(%). Do NOT enter the % sign in the box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        The penalty percentage is no longer available for the Match (without repetition) mode. In that mode, each incorrect match costs 1 point out of the total of selected cards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        2.4 Pass percentage<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

        When modes other than Free browsing<\/strong> are selected this new setting becomes available. This setting is the percentage of the total score required for getting result.success in xAPI statements reporting (e.g. in Moodle etc). If you do not use your H5P activities on Moodle or any other such platforms which record XAPI statements, you can ignore this setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        2.5 Background colour of the cards<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

        The background colour of the cards. The default value is transparent rgba(0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0).  A colour selector is provided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        2.6 Order of cards<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

        Select the order of the cards displayed to the user. The options are: Normal order \/ Random order \/ User choice<\/em>. If “User Choice” and the user selects “Random”, she will be able to choose the number of cards drawn from the card pool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Please note that in the current official H5P Dialog Cards content, the Normal\/Random Order option is only available in Normal mode; in Repetition mode the cards are always displayed in random order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        When Random order<\/em> or User choice<\/em> are selected, one further option becomes available:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        2.7 Select number of cards displayed<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

        Allow user to select the number of cards drawn from the pool for the current session. It is especially useful if your cards pool has a large number of cards. Even if the option is selected in the parameters, it will only get displayed to the end-user if there are at least 5 cards in the pool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        2.8 Display which side first\/on the left?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

        Select the card display mode. This option is especially useful if the front of the cards is not really a question. It is illustrated in the “Flags and Countries” example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Currently this option is available in all modes but is not recommended in the Match & Match with repetition modes<\/em>..<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        2.9 Two more options available In Free Browsing Mode only<\/em><\/h5>\n\n\n\n
        2.9.1 Do not use text?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n

        Description: “Check this box if you only use only images and audio on front and back of cards, no text”. Even if you have entered text for the front or back cards, if you check this option, those texts will not be displayed to the end-user (student). This option will noticeably reduce the height of the Dialog cards, by removing the unused blank space under the pictures (or audio buttons).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        2.9.2 Browse cards side by side?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n

        Check this box if you want to browse the cards displayed side by side<\/em>. If you have enabled sub-titles<\/em>, they will be displayed below the cards. These 2 features are illustrated in the “Countable vs Uncountable content”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        2.10 New option available in Self Correction mode<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

        From version 1.16.14 of August 2025 a new option is available: Hide the Turn button on back of cards<\/em><\/strong>? Check this box if you want to replace the Turn<\/strong>‘ button label with ‘Check<\/strong>‘ and hide it on the back of cards. Rationale: in the Self Correction mode, once the end-user has moved from the front to the back of the card, it is usually not needed to turn the card again to move to its font side. Note that this option is not set by default. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \n\n\n\n

        General remark.-<\/strong> In each “pack of cards” it is not advised to mix cards with different type of content, e.g. card #1 front picture only; card #2 audio on front and back but no picture and no text, etc. If you do, then unwanted display problems may happen. Try to be consistent!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        3.- H5P features availability<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

        3.1.- The Save content state<\/em> feature is available (if enabled site-wide on your site).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        3.2.- The user’s results <\/em>are saved on the site.  If you use Dialog Cards ‘papi Jo’ activities on a Moodle site, for all those activities which use scored options (all options except for Free Browsing), a detailed report for each attempt will be available, including the “Pass percentage” option for the Student and the Teacher in the Grades menu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        3.2- Languages<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

        Starting with version 1.16.14 of August 2025, the editing interface and end-user interface are available in the following languages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
