The ‘Barnsley’ Lavatera, a fragile plant!

Continuation of the “adventures” of my Lavatera Barnsley…

By the middle of June my Barnsley Lavatera was in full bloom, swaying its long, tender stems with two-coloured flowers. But suddenly a gust of wind mingled with heavy rain gave papi Jo’s garden a bit of a shake. In spite of the girdle made from several iron stakes, some of the stems did not resist and were half or totally torn off at the point of insertion on the woody stems of the past years.

It was necessary to remove the torn stems, add urgently add new iron stakes, plus a few strings, and even put in some “splints” to limit the damage. Luckily most of the permanently removed stems were at the back of the plant, so it has lost none of its beauty and continues to be part of the garden’s decor.
