IMPORTANT !
All the H5P ‘papi Jo’ libraries need the H5P API 1.28 ‘new look’ to be installed on your site.

This site is the repository of the H5P ‘papi Jo’ activities/libraries. The ‘papi Jo’ activities are forks of the official H5P activities to be found on the H5P site. Those forks have two origins. First the frustration at seeing a number of bugs (some of them trivial) reported on the H5P forums, with fixes sometimes reported as PRs in the H5P github but never actually fixed over the years. Secondly, in the course of regular use of the H5P activities, the need for some new features emerged, again mentioned in the forums but rarely implemented in the core H5P libraries.

In each of the sections below you will find the following:

A detailed documentation page of the H5P ‘papi Jo’ activity.
A Template H5P activity which you can download and install on your own site to be able to use the H5P ‘papi Jo’ activity.
A number of examples (usually not downloadable).

Installation Instructions for all the H5P ‘papi Jo’ contents

The template h5p content (for each H5P papi Jo version) is the recommended h5p file to download to your computer and to upload to your own website (Drupal, Moodle or WordPress platform) in order to install the H5P ‘Papi Jo’ libraries.

First make sure that the site where you want to import the papi Jo libraries is currently using the H5P API 1.28 (aka ‘new look’). This should be the case if you are using the latest H5P plugin version on WordPress (minimum Version 1.17.8) or if you are using at least Moodle 5.2.
Not tested with Drupal 11.

Click the Reuse button located just at the bottom of each template activity.
Then click the Download as an .h5p file link to download this content to your computer. Take note of the name of the file, something like advanced-fill-the-blanks-papijo-23-23.h5p. This file has an .h5p extension!
Then go to your own website (Drupal, Moodle or WordPress platform) where you already have installed the H5P plugin, of course. For use with Lumi if installed on your computer, see below.
Go to Create a new H5P content, and, at the top of the list of available contents, instead of clicking the default Create Content button, click the Upload button.
Then click Upload an H5P file, browse your computer for the H5P template file you have just saved, Click Use.
If all goes well, you should see the contents of the template file. You may also see a message “updated libraries”.
Save and View the template file. You can then delete it, you are set to create your own contents by selecting the HP ‘papi Jo’ content in the list of available contents…

Windows ‘companion’ utilities for h5p -> papi Jo conversion

If you already have a number of existing h5p contents on your site, you may want to convert them to their papi Jo equivalents, then edit the converted contents to add more available ‘papi Jo’ features, etc.

This is the list of default H5P libraries which can be converted to the ‘papi Jo’ versions

Question Set conversions also update supported nested H5P library references.
Dialog Cards conversions move legacy image and audio fields into the Papi Jo
media structure.

Depending on which platform you are using, you can dowload and run 2 Windows utilities.

Using H5P on a Moodle site

1.- Go into your Moodle course; go to Course reuse -> Backup; select the h5p files you want to backup and perform backup. If your course also has h5p contents in the Content Bank, make sure you tick “Include content bank content” when performing the backup. Find the backup file in the Restore folder and Download it somewhere on your Windows machine.

2.- Then go to my GitHub repo at https://github.com/rezeau/papijo-moodle-backup-h5p-extractor/releases and select the latest release. From the Assets window download and run PapiJo-Moodle-Backup-H5P-Extractor.exe. The interface is self-explanatory. Suggested output folder name: RecoveredH5P.

3.- This will collect within one folder on your Windows computer all the h5p contents you want to convert to their papi Jo version. Then go to my GitHub repo at https://github.com/rezeau/papijo-windows-h5p-converter/releases and select the latest release. From the Assets window download Papijo-Windows-H5p-Converter.exe and run it on your Windows computer.

4.- Finally you’ll have to upload the converted to papi Jo h5p contents one by one to your Moodle site. There is no other way to do that operation “in bulk”. Then you can edit those h5p contents and take advantage of all the papi Jo advanced options.

The first time in a Windows session that you try to run one of these 2 programs, you will probably get a warning popup window saying:

Microsoft Defender SmartScreen prevented an unrecognised app from starting. Running this app might put your PC at risk.

click on Run anyway There is absolutely no risk running both apps, Microsoft Defender is just being over-zealous here.

Using H5P on a WordPress site

It’s possible for a WP site admin to export the default h5p contents previously created on the site and to convert them to their papi Jo versions, all with a single WP plugin. Papijo Package Converter for H5P is available from the WP Plugins database. Install it on your WP site. It will automatically detect any of your H5P contents which are compatible with the papi Jo version and convert them.

Then, you’ll have to upload the converted to papi Jo h5p contents one by one to your WP site. There is no other way to do that operation “in bulk”. Then you can edit those h5p contents and take advantage of all the papi Jo advanced options.

I have also created a useful little WP plugin which will list where each of your h5p contents (based on the default libraries or the ‘papi Jo’ libraries) is actually used in a post or page on your WP site. This other plugin is currently awaiting for approval by the WP people.

Using H5P on other sites

You’ll have to do the first operation, i.e. export convertible h5p contents to your local machine yourself. Depending on your platform, this might be done ‘in bulk’. If not, then you’ll have to export your contents one by one, using the Reuse button at the bottom left of your contents.

Then, on Windows only, you can use the Papijo-Windows-H5p-Converter.exe utility as explained above.

Warning.- The papi Jo H5P libraries are not official, they are not supported by the H5P core team. Install them on a test site and test thoroughly before installing on a production site. There is no guarantee of future updates nor of support. However, I will do my best to answer queries posted to h5p@rezeau.org. Install at own risk!

How am I informed of new versions of the ‘papi Jo’ libraries? There is no automatic ‘New version available’ mechanism comparable to the official H5P libraries mechanism. If you want to be advised of new versions, please post your email details to me and you will receive an email each time new versions are made available.
